How do energy brokers make money?
Most are paid by the supplier through a commission built into the unit rate you pay, typically half a penny to two pence per kilowatt-hour over the contract term. On a business using 100,000 kWh a year, a 1p uplift is £1,000 a year. Since 2024 brokers must disclose this commission to micro-businesses, and any broker should tell you the figure when asked. Some work for a fixed fee instead, which is more transparent.
Is it worth using a broker for business energy?
For a small business with a single meter and time to compare a few suppliers, not necessarily. For multi-site businesses, high consumption, or anyone who has ever been rolled onto out-of-contract rates because a renewal date passed unnoticed, a good broker earns their commission by managing the calendar and the supplier. The test is whether they show you the market, not only their recommendation.
